INTRODUCTION TO DISASTER MANAGEMENT

DISASTER MANAGEMENT – INSTITUTIONAL SETUP

The Department of Revenue and Disaster Management, Puducherry is the nodal department for management of disasters and focus on pre-disaster phase (i.e.) prevention, mitigation, preparedness, capacity building and awareness, community based disaster management and also undertakes relief and rehabilitation activities post disaster (i.e.) proactive response, relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction. The Administration is sensitive to the vulnerability of disasters and it has undertaken efforts to build a safe and disaster resilient Union Territory.

Consequent to the implementation of Disaster Management Act, 2005, disaster prevention is increasingly becoming priority in India. Acting to the instructions laid down in the said Act, the Union Territory of Puducherry has constituted the following authorities w.e.f. 01.08.2007. The constitution of authorities are as follows:-

PUDUCHERRY DISASTER MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY (PDMA)

The Union Territory of Puducherry constituted Puducherry Disaster Management Authority under the chairmanship of Chief Minister vide Notification dated 01.08.2007 and 19.06.2008. The proposal of reconstitution has been submitted to the approval of the Government after dissolution of former PDMA.

STATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE (SEC)

Under the provisions of Section 20, Sub Section(1) laid down in Disaster Management Act 2005, the State Executive Committee has been constituted w.e.f. 01.08.2007, as detailed below:-
